230 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will favourably consider the inclusion of Castlecomer community school, County Kilkenny, in the early school leavers initiative programme in view of the excellent submission forwarded to his Department recently by the board of management. The Deputy refers to the recent £4.5 million stay-in-school initiative which is aimed at keeping pupils in school up to the end of the leaving certificate.
It is envisaged that the initiative will initially involve a limited number of schools with significant retention difficulties and that the process of selection will be finalised following the appointment of a co-ordinator to the scheme.
This appointment is expected to be advertised shortly with a view to having the person in question in place early in the next school year.
