Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Properties.

Jack Wall

Question:

254 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the current position in relation to an application by Gaelscoil Cill Dara, Curragh, County Kildare, seeking permission from his Department to gain access to its proposed site; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17780/99]

Seán Power

Question:

258 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence the reason discussions are taking place with the Department of Education and Science to establish if a more suitable location for the gaelscoil can be identified when a site at Lumville has been proposed and an application has been made for access across the Curragh. [18013/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 254 and 258 together.

The position is that the Department of Education and Science has indicated to my Department that it is considering the possibility of such a school being established on an alternative site.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

255 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Defence the reason outstanding debts which his Department owes to a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan have not been paid in view of the fact that the former Army barracks in Castleblayney have now been sold. [17920/99]

Seymour Crawford

Question:

256 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Defence the reason outstanding debts which his Department owes to a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan have not been paid in view of the fact that the former army Barracks in Castleblayney have been sold; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17921/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 255 and 256 together.

The persons referred to in the questions were sub-contractors employed by the main building contractor who was engaged by my Department in 1994 to carry out a construction project at Castleblayney military post. My Department has no contractual liability to those sub-contractors. It appears that an order for the winding up of the main contractor's company was granted in the Northern Ireland courts in 1996 and that the relevant authority in regard to matters arising therefrom is the official receiver whose address is Fermanagh House, Ormeau Avenue, Belfast BT2 8NJ.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

257 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Defence the consideration, if any, received by his Department in respect of the sale of the former military barracks at Castleblayney, County Monaghan; and, if so, the source of this consideration. [17971/99]

The formalities regarding the sale of the former military barracks at Castleblayney have not yet been finalised. It is anticipated that the legal and financial considerations will be completed shortly.

Billy Timmins

Question:

259 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Defence if his Department disposed of any assets or property with a value of or greater than £200,000 between 1987 and 1992 inclusive without going to public tender; if so, if he will give details and circumstances of these sales; and the reason for the decision not to go to public tender. [18063/99]

The Department disposed of one property in 1990 by way of private treaty following an advertised sales campaign in the national press. The disposal involved the sale of 3.5 acres approximately of surplus land at Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin. The sale was conducted through an estate agent and was deemed at the time to be the most effective means of realising the maximum return to the State. In addition, in 1988 Griffith Barracks was vacated by the Defence Forces and returned immediately to the Office of Public Works.
