Question:

269 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the financial contribution, if any, his Department has made to the removal of phosphates at the sewerage treatment plant in Ringsend, Dublin 4; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18821/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 268 and 269 together.

A total of £10.9 million, out of the total approved capital provision of £123 million has been claimed from my Department by Dublin Corporation to date in respect of this plant and has been paid.

The new treatment works at Ringsend are designed to achieve the water quality standards as set out in the Dublin Bay water quality management plan and the urban waste water treatment directive. Phosphate removal is not required to achieve these standards in this case and is not provided for in the Ringsend plant.
