Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Seán Power

Question:

239 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on class sizes at second level; the plans, if any, he has to deal with the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19242/99]

Ulick Burke

Question:

248 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to reduce class size at second level schools in view of the fact they are now larger than they were 20 years ago, subject choice is further restricted and new programmes and syllabi have been introduced; when he will reduce class size and provide adequate resources to finance these changes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19251/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 239 and 248 together.

The pupil-teacher ratio in second level schools has reduced significantly in recent years.

The actual pupil-teacher ratio in 1998-9 was of the order of 15.4 to 1. The Deputy will be aware that an additional 225 teaching posts are being created in second level schools for the 1999-2000 school year. In addition, a retention ratio of 18:1 is being applied which has resulted in schools being allowed to retain teachers who might otherwise have been redeployed.

School authorities may apply for an increase in the approved teacher allocation to cater for particular circumstances. Applications of this nature are considered under the curricular appeal process and each case is considered on its merits.

I assure the Deputy that the question of further reducing the pupil-teacher ratio and thereby reducing class sizes will be kept under review in the context of available resources.
