Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - Duty Free Sales

Ivan Yates

Question:

121 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her Department has carried out a review of the impact on job losses due to the loss of the duty free facilities; and the steps, if any, she has taken to secure jobs in the public sector under her aegis in this regard. [19342/99]

As the Deputy is aware, Ireland commissioned its own study regarding the impact of the loss of duty free facilities and these results were used to press the case for retaining duty free and tax free sales to EU travellers post 30 June 1999. The Deputy must also be aware that my colleagues and I did all in our power to have the situation reviewed. However, the European Council's decision has been implemented and we have to live with it.

All transport operators have been hit with a loss of revenue. However, Aer Rianta has not announced any permanent job cuts as a result of the abolition.
