Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Re-interment of 1916 Rising Leader.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

298 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will approve the re-interment of the remains of executed 1916 Rising leader, Tomás Ceannt, from Cork prison to a more fitting resting place which can be visited by the public. [19798/99]

I understand from the governor of Cork Prison that, in a previous attempt at re-interment, the body of Tomás Ceannt could not be located in the grave.

The authorities in Cork Prison facilitate visits to the grave for wreath laying by relatives and friends of veterans of the War of Independence and, more recently, by the Thomas Kent Branch of the Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and Women – ONE. I can assure the Deputy that the authorities in Cork Prison will continue to facilitate such visits.
