Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rail Accidents.

Paul McGrath

Question:

182 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will comment on the huge amount of debris, sleepers and pieces of track left along or adjacent to tracks after repairs or upgrading in view of the rail safety monitoring role of her Department; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that this material was recently the cause of two serious incidents on the Dublin to Galway rail track at Castledaly, County Westmeath; if she will ask Iarnród Éireann for a statement on this safety issue; and if she will instruct the company to immediately review the situation and have these objects systematically removed. [21695/99]

I share the Deputy's concern on this matter, especially in the light of the two incidents in County Westmeath. The chief railway inspecting officer is pursuing the matter with Iarnród Éireann.
