Vol. 512 No. 6

Written Answers. - Diagnostic Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

280 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce an access by right to hospital-based diagnostic services for general practitioners. [27048/99]

General practitioners already have increasing access to hospital based diagnostic services from lab tests and radiology services to ultrasound and others. While the particular extent of services available may vary in any individual area, the primary care and community care units in the boards are generally seeking to further develop the existing range of diagnostic services open to general practitioners. Accordingly, the matter of access is kept under ongoing review in each health board and I am satisfied that this is the best way to proceed.
