Vol. 512 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sexual Offences.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

334 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the measures, if any, he proposes to put in place in relation to the approximately 35 juveniles involved in the sex trade in Waterford (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26656/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence to suggest, and no complaint has been received at Waterford Garda station to the effect that juveniles are involved in the sex trade in the city.

I am also informed that the Garda aware of the DORAS committee and both members of the juvenile liaison office in Waterford are involved with this initiative. I understand that local gardaí will contact the DORAS committee in relation to the 35 juveniles mentioned in the report. No complaint has yet been received from DORAS in relation to any juvenile who may be involved, but should any complaints be made they will be fully investigated.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the guidelines for reporting incidents between the Garda and health boards are in place and will be implemented where necessary.
