Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Michael Ring

Question:

182 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the position on the flooding problem at Ballinacarra, Kilmaine, County Mayo; if an environmental impact study will be carried out in that area; if so, the individual who will pay for the study; and if he will provide a copy of the report prepared on this issue. [2479/00]

The flooding problem at Ballinacarra, Kilmaine, County Mayo has been the subject of ongoing investigation by the Office of Public Works and Mayo County Council for some time now. Consulting engineers commissioned by the Office of Public Works have submitted a draft preliminary report on the localised flood relief works necessary to reduce the extent of the flooding problem in the area and a copy of this report has been forwarded to Mayo County Council for its attention and has been accepted by it. Any studies arising out of the report will be paid for by the Office of Public Works. In view of the possible impacts on turloughs in the area, a full environmental impact assessment, which could take at least one year to complete, will be required. Arrangements are being put in hand to advance these studies, the cost of which will be met by the Office of Public Works. Copies of the EIS report will be available on completion.
