Vol. 513 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

63 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if persons who have a reduced contributory old age pension will benefit from pre-1953 contributions in order to bring their pensions to a higher level in view of his assurances that pre-1953 contributions will be allowed in future; and if the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6W will be examined. [2905/00]

As I indicated in my budget speech, my Department has been examin ing ways in which further recognition can be given to pre-1953 contributions for those people who failed to qualify for a pension and I intend to bring forward proposals in this area in the Social Welfare Bill. In addition, I will also bring forward proposals for some rationalisation of the current rates of contributory old age and retirement pension in this Bill.

Until these proposals are finalised, it is not possible to indicate if the person concerned will qualify for a higher rate of pension.
