Vol. 516 No. 5

Written Answers. - Landlord Register.

Tony Gregory

Question:

221 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the steps, if any, he is taking to ensure that local authorities register all landlords whose tenants are in receipt of supplementary welfare allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8506/00]

Landlords have a duty to register all dwellings to which the Housing (Registration of Rented Dwellings) Regulations, 1996, apply, irrespective of the source of income of the tenant. Local authorities are responsible for enforcing the regulations and they are encouraged to make every effort to achieve compliance with the regu lations. Ways to further assist local authorities in this regard will be pursued including the provision of information to local authorities regarding tenancies supported through the supplementary welfare allowance scheme. This will be facilitated by provisions in the Social Welfare Bill, 2000.
