Vol. 517 No. 2

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

116 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Health and Children where he intends the facility for treatment and disposal of chemical healthcare waste to be located; the date for completion of the facility; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9471/00]

A joint waste management board representative of my Department and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland sought tenders for the collection, transport, treatment and disposal of the clinical-healthcare risk waste arising in the public health services throughout Ireland. The contract has been awarded to Sterile Technologies Ireland Limited, whose head office and first treatment plant is in the Western Industrial Estate, Naas Road, Dublin 12. A second plant is envisaged and the company is seeking a location outside Dublin. The Northern Ireland plant is to be located at Antrim.

The Dublin facility is complete and has been licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency. It is not possible at this stage to give a precise date for the completion of the other two plants.
