Vol. 517 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax and Welfare Systems.

John Bruton

Question:

25 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the importance of the Oireachtas as a social partner, he will consult with the Opposition on the terms of the request he is to make to the National Economic and Social Council to review the strategic options for the future of the tax and welfare systems over the next ten years. [7674/00]

The Programme for Prosperity and Fairness contains a commitment that the Government will request the NESC to review the strategic options for the future of the tax and welfare systems over the next ten years taking account of emerging trends and policy objectives. This report will be produced by September 2001. A request will be formally conveyed to NESC early in the term of the new agreement. It is not intended to restrict the scope for the NESC review as the terms of reference in the programme require no further clarification.
