Vol. 518 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tobacco Regulations.

Question:

137 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps he will take to promote the designation of non-smoking areas in bars and pubs. [12290/00]

Environmental tobacco smoke is a real and substantial threat to health. Discussions are taking place with representatives of the licensed trade regarding the problems associated with smoking in pubs. Persons working in licensed premises need to be afforded the optimum level of protection from environmental tobacco smoke. Most non-smokers, who comprise about 70% of the adult population, find environmental tobacco smoke offensive, unpleasant and unhygienic apart from the health hazard involved. It is my intention that future arrangements for public houses will reflect this reality.
