Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Coastal Accretion.

Ivor Callely

Question:

137 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals to address the accretion of the sea bed in Dublin Bay; the studies and research carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12583/00]

I have no proposals at present to address accretion within the Dublin Bay area. Where there is a danger to navigation it is a matter for the port company to dredge the relevant area.

The Deputy will be aware that Dublin Corporation commissioned a report, which was published in 1996, into accretion at Bull Island. That report recommended that a further study should be commissioned in the year 2001 in order to provide a firm basis for further action, if any, to be taken. My Department has approved grant aid for Dublin Corporation at the rate of 75% and subject to a maximum of £112,500 towards the cost of such a study to be completed this year. A breach of the Bull Island causeway would primarily be a matter for Dublin Corporation to pursue.
