Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - RTE Transmission Service.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

146 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 148 of 1 March 2000, she has arrived at a policy position on whether the transmission function currently held by RTE, should be disposed of to a private entity charged also with the construction of the DTT infrastructure. [13171/00]

The process of developing a transaction structure to establish a digital terrestrial television – DTT – entity is ongoing. As I have indicated to the House, difficulties have arisen in the complex process of establishing a DTT entity as originally envisaged. I have been forced to consider alternative approaches with a view to moving the project forward in a manner most likely to achieve the successful introduction of the DTT platform. Consultations on these options are ongoing and, if and when I decide that it is necessary to bring proposals to Government to progress the matter further, I will do so.
