Vol. 519 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

147 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position in relation to the replacement of the Mary Street Garda Station, Limerick; if it is intended to knock the present building; if so when; if the current temporary accommodation will be maintained until the new premises are available; the timetable in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13165/00]

I understand that the Garda authorities are assessing a sketch scheme for Mary Street at present. However, I have been informed by the Office of Public Works that, because of the probable archaeological importance of the site in question, an evaluation of the full implications of proceeding with the building of a new station on the site is currently being undertaken. Accordingly, a policing service will continue to be provided from the prefabricated buildings in the station yard.

As with all items on the Garda building programme work can only proceed according to overall priorities and the availability of financial and other resources.
