Vol. 519 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools' Sports Facilities.

Jack Wall

Question:

311 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide funding to secondary schools for the provision of sports facilities given that a high percentage of secondary schools have little or no such means of providing for their pupils; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14222/00]

It is the policy of my Department to provide sport facilities on a phased basis, as resources permit, to all schools that do not already have access to such facilities.

At present, the planning and building unit of my Department is preparing a physical education hall template. This template will standardise the construction of physical education halls at second level schools and will reduce the architectural planning process considerably.

When this template becomes available, all schools that have applied to my Department for the provision of sports facilities will be considered for funding in light of available resources and competing priorities at that time.
