Question:

270 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the proportion of first year enrolments which took up the following subjects in each of the years 1987 and 1988, in 1992 and 1993 and in 1998-99 at the institutes of technology and in the universities: (i) arts and social science, (ii) sciences and applied sciences, (iii) business and administration, (iv) engineering and technology and (v) law. [16090/00]

My Department annually gathers data from the institutes of technology and universities for the first year student enrolment by field of study for full-time students only. The following represents the breakdown of these enrolments proportionate to overall first year in-take for the years requested:

Note: Prior to the 1999-2000 academic year, the category ‘Other' represents service sector programmes/courses which have developed in the ITs but also includes some music, language and communications course enrolments. Numbers enrolled in social studies programmes have tended to be included under either business studies or ‘other' in this sector.
