124 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children his views on the role of advertising and sponsorship by the drinks industry in the high levels of alcohol abuse among both adults and children; the proposals, if any, he has to curb or outlaw such promotion of alcohol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The health promotion unit of my Department has a responsibility for stimulating multi-sectoral responses to health promotion issues. In exercising this role, the health promotion unit has commissioned research into the impact of alcohol advertising on young people. The results of this research will be available later in the year. The outcome of this research will inform future multi-sectoral debate in this area.
