Vol. 522 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Warden Service.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

287 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has satisfied himself with the progress being made on the pilot scheme of the community warden service; the plans if any, he has, to extend this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18451/00]

The community warden service is to be piloted in five local authorities – Galway city, Galway, Leitrim and Wexford county councils and Naas UDC. Local task forces are being established in each of the pilot authorities to develop detailed, appropriate implementation proposals with a view to the pilots starting in early 2001. The pilots will run for three years whereupon there will be a full evaluation before deciding on wider implementation of the new service. I am satisfied with the progress to date and I am confident the pilots will deliver hard facts upon which to base future decisions regarding the service.
