Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Richard Bruton

Question:

89 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the number of DART carriages and buses to serve the Dublin area delivered in the past twelve months; the scheduled delivery over the next 12 months; the total size of these fleets at the end of each of the years 1998, 1999 and the projected delivery for June 2001 together with their carrying capacity; and if these fleets will be sufficient to fully serve the extended DART network and the operation of the 11 proposed quality bus corridors. [19022/00]

Bus Átha Cliath purchased 215 buses in 1999. One hundred and fifty of these were additions to its fleet, co-financed by the Exchequer and the EU. The balance replaced buses in its existing fleet. Bus Átha Cliath has ordered 225 buses for delivery in 2000, accelerating the original delivery schedule under the national development plan. Some 125 of this order will be additions to its fleet. Ten DART cars have been delivered so far this year and a further 16 are scheduled for delivery by end 2000. All are additions to the fleet.

Negotiations are still under way in relation to deliveries of buses for 2001 and it is not possible at present to specify the exact number of deliveries expected from January to June 2001. No deliveries of DART carriages are scheduled for 2001. Iarnród Éireann has recently placed an order for 12 more DART carriages for delivery in 2002. The additions to the bus fleet are primarily intended to serve the quality bus corridors, while the additional DART units will service the extensions to Greystones and Malahide and provide for increased capacity on existing services.

The total size of the bus and DART fleets serving the greater Dublin area at the end 1998 and 1999 was as follows:

The national development plan's public transport investment provisions for the greater Dublin area are aimed at meeting a growing demand for public transport and relieving congestion, and are in accordance with the recommendations of the DTO's Dublin transportation blueprint 2000-2006. The combination of infrastructural improvements and the additional rolling stock proposed under the national development plan will increase DART capacity by almost 7,400 places and suburban rail capacity by 7,800 seats and will increase the capacity of both Bus Átha Cliath and Bus Éireann by 22,000 extra seats over the period of the plan.
