Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legal Action.

Question:

107 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of legal actions entered into by the Department within the last 12 months; the number that are either successful, failed or ongoing; the total cost of these actions; the number of barristers employed; and the amount of money given to each barrister. [19074/00]

The Director of Public Prosecutions, on behalf of this Department, has initiated proceedings in 15 cases since 26 June 1999; of these cases seven have been dealt with, six successfully and one unsuccessfully, the remaining eight cases are ongoing.

The question of costs of these actions, number of barristers employed and the amount of money given to each barrister is not a matter for my Department but for the Office of the Chief State Solicitor.
