Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rehabilitation Services.

John Perry

Question:

127 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there are at least 650 stroke patients in the north-west region and that people who require rehabilitation have to go to Dun Laoghaire, which is not accessible to all, and not everyone has the opportunity to avail of the services; the plans he has to establish a rehabilitation unit in the area, as the unit would not only provide intensive and long-term therapies to stroke survivors, but also to patients with head injuries and amputees; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that a consultant in rehabilitation medicine and a speech therapist who are trained to deal specifically with adults is required as at present there is no speech therapist trained to deal with aphasia, which occurs both after strokes and head injuries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18825/00]

The provision of rehabilitation services for people in the north-west region is a matter for the North Western Health Board. My Department proposes to set up an expert committee, including health board representatives, to draw up a national strategy for the development of rehabilitation services. The services required in the north-west region will be examined in this context.
