Vol. 522 No. 4

Written Answers. - Housing Aid for the Elderly.

Noel Ahern

Question:

188 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if there is any special grant available for the provision of indoor toilet facilities for elderly people and others; if the disabled persons extension grant scheme could be used automatically in this regard where the applicant is over 75/80 years of age; and the options available to such persons in privately owned houses. [19026/00]

There is a number of options currently available to assist lower income households and elderly persons in particular to secure necessary improvement works to privately owned houses. These include the disabled persons grant scheme, the essential repairs grant scheme, the improvement works in lieu of local authority housing scheme, the task force on special housing aid for the elderly and the local authority house improvement loan scheme.

It is a matter for the individual local authorities to decide on issues including the circumstances in which any of these schemes of assistance are appropriate other than assistance under the task force which is administered by the health board.
