Vol. 523 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

189 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if officials from Waterways Ireland are vigorously pursing an unlawful development (details supplied) in Dublin 12; if every effort will be made to bring this development to a halt and have the site concerned reinstated in full; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21080/00]

This is primarily a matter for Waterways Ireland, a North-South implementation body for inland waterways, which was established on 2 December 1999 on foot of the British-Irish Agreement signed in March 1999.

I understand from Waterways Ireland that it recently lodged an objection to a planning application submitted by the developer for the site. The developer was subsequently refused planning permission by the planning authority. There has been no further development at the site. Waterways Ireland informed me that it will continue to make every effort to achieve the reinstatement of canal property. Any further concerns that the Deputy may have in this matter should be pursued by him directly with Waterways Ireland.
