Vol. 524 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Donal Carey

Question:

441 Mr. D. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals he has for the education of persons (details supplied) in County Clare whose parents are seeking special help to make them ready for further education; and the reason additional funds were not provided to them so they might avail of the services of a private tutor who has special skills. [22288/00]

I understand that my Department's inspectorate has received an application for resource teacher support in respect of two of the pupils referred to by the Deputy who are attending a primary school in County Clare. The inspectorate's report on the level of support required by these two pupils is currently awaited. As soon as this report is received, my Department will be in contact with the school authorities in relation to this matter.

I understand that the third pupil mentioned by the Deputy attends a second level school in County Clare. With effect from the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year, all second level schools have an ex-quota staffing allocation to cater for pupils with special needs. If they have not already done so, I would suggest that the parents of this pupil contact the authorities at the school in question in relation to the child's special needs.
