Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Services.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

318 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in respect of a highly vulnerable person (details supplied), he will make urgent arrangements for an appropriate placement for him either in a training unit or therapeutic unit; if he will consider temporary release under supervision; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26838/00]

The prisoner referred to has received a high level of support following his allegation of rape. Appropriate medical, psychiatric and psychological services are available to him. In addition he has been facilitated with attendance at the Rape Crisis Centre and daily visits from his family.

Full and careful consideration has been given to a request for temporary release. This request was refused following consultation with the prison authorities, the psychiatric and the psychological services.

However, I have approved a transfer to the training unit which took place this morning.
