Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

425 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he will accept and support the proposals to change the new proposed area payments to ensure that hill farmers on the western seaboard will not be discriminated against; and if he will consider proposals at the rate of £90 per 45 hectares. [1982/01]

The position is as outlined in reply to Parliamentary Question No. 200 on Tuesday, 17 October 2000. The scheme now outlined by the Deputy would again involve substantial extra funding over and above that already provided for under the agreed scheme.

At my request, my officials are currently reviewing the disadvantaged areas compensatory allowance scheme with the aim of finding an equitable long-term solution to the problem of losses.
