Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Asylum Seekers.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

982 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will decide on the application for asylum by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30443/00]

The applicant arrived in the State on 8 June 1997. Following an interview, his application for refugee status was turned down. Subsequently he appealed this decision and the independent appeals authority recommended that the appeal be refused.

The applicant was then informed that it was proposed to make a deportation order in respect of him and he was given the opportunity to either leave the State voluntarily, consent to a deportation order or to make representations as to why he should not be deported. Representations have been received from his legal representatives as well as several other individuals and I understand that the case file of the person referred to is due to be submitted to me for a decision in the near future.
