Vol. 529 No. 1

Written Answers. - Traffic Offences.

Bernard Allen

Question:

1018 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of £50 speeding tickets sent by Gardaí in 1999 and 2000; and the number of fines actually paid. [1412/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a total of 178,009 fixed penalty notices were issued by the Garda for speeding offences in 1999 and fines were paid, without the need to issue legal proceedings, in respect of 145,317 or 82% of the fines which were issued.

In relation to the year 2000, I understand that 224,000 speeding fines were issued by gardaí. However, it is not possible to quantify at this early stage in 2001 the number of fines actually paid.
Where a speeding fine remains unpaid legal proceedings are instituted by the Garda.
