Vol. 530 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Inquiry.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

132 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received a request for a public inquiry to be held into cases of improper care while under the care of a person (details supplied); if he has read the reports on this case; his views on whether there is need for clarification on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4078/01]

I have received a request from Patient Focus, a patient advocacy group, to establish an independent inquiry into the matter referred to by the Deputy. The matter is however, at present being investigated by the Medical Council in the context of its statutory functions as set out in the 1978 Medical Practitioners Act.

I will await the outcome of the council's deliberations prior to deciding what further measures may be required in this case.
