Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

54 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the status of the roll out of fixed speed cameras; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6210/01]

The Government's national strategy on road safety gave a commitment that progress will be maintained in extending the use of automatic speed detection devices, both mobile and fixed. Fixed cameras are being operated on a pilot basis by the gardaí in conjunction with the National Roads Authority. The effectiveness in reducing speed and accidents of the present cameras is being evaluated.

Future decisions on the purchase and deployment of fixed cameras will be influenced by the findings of the evaluation, bearing in mind that fixed cameras are only one element of Garda covert and overt operations in reducing speed. In this regard, there are six mobile cameras in operation throughout the State and the gardaí are in the process of acquiring a seventh mobile unit. Also, the gardaí possess a range of speed detection equipment including in car video systems, motor cycle mounted cameras, laser guns and tripod mounted lasers. Garda traffic management are satisfied that a combination of the use of mobile and fixed cameras as well as highly visible Garda checkpoints represents best practice in enforcing road traffic legislation.
