Vol. 531 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Strength.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

55 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he is satisfied that Garda strength is in accordance with international norms in all divisions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6240/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the population-police ratio for Ireland is 318. Available statistics for Europe indicate an average population-police ratio of 307. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that Garda personnel assigned throughout the country, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategy, are continually monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and that the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public. Garda management will continue to appraise the policing and administrative strategy employed nationwide with a view to ensuring that an effective Garda service is maintained.
