Question:

155 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the percentage of GDP which was spent here on the health service in the year 2000 in total and in public expenditure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6412/01]

The provisional gross capital-non-capital public expenditure figure for the year 2000 was £4,694 million. This figure does not include hepatitis C compensation payments of £43 million. This figure represents 5.78 % of gross domestic product or 6.82% of gross national product. The GDP and GNP figures are taken from the Central Bank's winter 2000 quarterly bulletin. Total expenditure on health care will not be available until publication of a household budget survey for the years 1999 and 2000 by the Central Statistics Office.
