Vol. 532 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Refurbishment.

Pat Carey

Question:

369 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of correspondence from the principal of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 11, and the urgency of the refurbishment programme for the school, it will be possible to meet the absolute deadline suggested in the letter as the latest time when work could begin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6592/01]

The authorities of the school in question have been advised by my Department to proceed to the next stage of the architectural planning process for the proposed extension and refurbishment works to the school. The rate of progress to construction depends on factors such as the complexity and size of the project, the time required to undertake architectural planning, the volume of other projects being dealt with by the design team and my Department's building unit, the period of time required for the granting of planning permission and obtaining a fire certificate, the availability of funding, the outcome of the tender competition and the procurement, where relevant, of bonds, insurance and tax clearance by prospective contractors. The Deputy will appreciate, therefore, that it is not possible to say at this point when construction will commence or to give any commitments in relation to predetermined deadlines. The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
