Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motor Fuels.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

96 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if any encouragement is available to motorists to convert to and use liquid petroleum gas in view of its environmental benefits. [9429/01]

There is a significant incentive available to motorists to use automotive LPG. The Irish rate of duty on automotive LPG at £41.75 per 1,000 litres compares favourably to the higher rates of £196.14 per 1,000 litres for auto diesel and £274.44 per 1,000 litres for unleaded petrol. The EU sets minimum rates for mineral oils, including LPG, under Council Directive 92/82/EEC and the minimum rate for auto LPG is £39.70 per 1,000 litres. Any further reduction by me is not practicable given the EU minimum rates. I have no plans to introduce additional reliefs to assist motorists to convert to and use automotive LPG.
