Question:

436 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will purchase a school site at Diswellstown, Dublin 15 in view of the fact that the exact location of a site has been agreed by Fingal County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9563/01]

A preliminary site inspection for the provision of a new primary school at Diswellstown, Dublin 15, has been carried out by my Department. The property management section of the Office of Public Works, which acts on behalf of my Department in relation to site acquisition generally, will now be requested to explore the possibility of acquiring a site for the proposed school.

Question:

437 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps which have been taken to implement the recommendations of the report of the technical working group of the Commission on School Accommodation, Study of the Lucan Area, which reported in May 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9564/01]

In response to recommendations in the report referred to by the Deputy, my Department has reserved sites in the Adamstown area of Lucan for a primary and a post-primary school. The question of whether to proceed with the development of these schools is under active consideration at present. South Dublin County Council is in the course of preparing a proposed plan for Adamstown which will assist my Department considerably in regard to school provision in that area. The proposed plan is expected to be available towards the end of April 2001. A further site for a primary school has been reserved in the Griffeen-Foxborough area.

Officials of my Department's planning section meet on a regular basis with the planning department of South Dublin County Council with a view to identifying the need for additional educational provision and reserving sites for schools where required. The views of existing providers in the area are also taken into consideration in this regard.

Denis Naughten

Question:

438 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans he has to reduce the local contribution for school extensions in disadvantaged communities; the caps on such contributions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9612/01]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the local contribution for capital projects at schools designated as disadvantaged by my Department is 5% of the contract sum subject to a cap of £10,000.

There are no immediate plans to reduce this cap further.
