Vol. 534 No. 3

Written Answers. - Artificial Insemination Service.

John Perry

Question:

116 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the loss incurred by operators of the artificial insemination service; the compensation plans he has in this regard; and when the service will recommence. [10619/01]

Many businesses, including the AI sector, have suffered as a result of the necessary restrictions which I had to put in place in order to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease. On 5 April, and following consultation with the organisations involved in the provision of AI services, I made a special order under the diseases of animals legislation which will allow for the resumption of cattle AI services under controlled conditions with effect from 19 April next. It is not intended to provide compensation to the AI sector.
