Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Alcoholic Beverage Labelling.

Richard Bruton

Question:

349 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has considered the option of introducing statutory health warnings on alcohol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12080/01]

The current position regarding the content of labels on alcoholic beverages is strictly regulated. The most recent development at EU level in relation to labels on alcoholic products is that all alcohol products must now display a list of ingredients. However, no agreement on health warnings has been reached. Research on the effectiveness of alcohol health warning labels in the United States is inconclusive, with only limited evidence of a positive impact on consumer knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. However, the research evidence will continue to be monitored.
