Question:

395 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposal he has to provide additional equipment and fire appliances to Dublin Corporation's fire and emergency service; when these proposals were approved; if Dublin Corporation has been informed; if so, when; the cost of the new appliances; if money has been allocated to Dublin Corporation, and if so, when it was allocated. My Department assists fire authorities in the provision of a fire service, including the provision of fire appliances and emergency and rescue equipment, by providing capital grants towards certain expenditure already incurred in respect of approved projects; annual capital allocations for individual fire authorities are not pre-determined in the case of the fire services capital programme.

Under the programme for the years 2000 and 2001, I gave approval to Dublin Corporation to seek tenders for a total of ten new fire appliances. The current position in respect of these and other proposals submitted by the corporation in relation to their fire service operations is set out in the following table:
