Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Motorcyclist Statistics.

Austin Currie

Question:

397 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of registered motorcyclists for each of the past five years and for each county. [11674/01]

Information on the number of persons who hold motorcycle driving licences is not available in my Department. More detailed statistical information on driver licences will be available when the computerised national driver file currently being developed is completed. However, the Irish Bulletin of Vehicle and Driver Statistics includes information on the number of motorcycles under licence up to the end of 1999. The bulletin is available in the Oireachtas Library. Details, by licensing authority, of the number of motorcycles under current licence at 31 December 2000 are set out in the following table:

Question:

398 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of deaths caused by motorcyclists for each of the past five years and for each county. [11675/01]

Statistics relating to road accidents, based on information provided by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual Road Accident Facts reports. The most recent report is in respect of 1999 and that report, with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library. The statistics relating to the year 2000 are preliminary figures. These reports do not purport to ascribe driver responsibility in road accidents in any level of detail.

The number of motorcyclists killed in road accidents from 1996 to 2000 is as follows:

Question:

399 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the training period for motorcyclists; and the cost to his Department or any other Government agency of this training. [11676/01]

My Department has provided financial support of £30,000 for an initiative by the Irish Motorcycle Action Group – MAG Ireland – to establish a network of motorcycle instructors, under the auspices of the Irish Rider Training Association – IRTA – for the purpose of providing initial practical training for motorcyclists before they go on the public road. Training for motorcyclists is also organised periodically by the Dublin local authorities. There is no statutorily specified regulatory training period for motorcyclists or for other vehicle drivers.
