Question:

519 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 201 of 4 April 2001, he will indicate the number of detections and prosecutions following the 23 house break-ins in Cabra east, Dublin 7. [11662/01]

Denis Naughten

Question:

520 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of violent assaults which have taken place to date in 2001; the number of murders which have been committed since 1 January 2001; the measures he is taking to reduce these numbers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11663/01]

With regard to the number of violent assaults, I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics in relation to the number of violent assaults which have taken place to date in 2001 are not yet available. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the number of murders currently under investigation from 1 January 2001 to date is 16 with 13 having been detected. I should stress that these figures are provisional and subject to change.

The investigation of all murders is the responsibility of local divisional and district officers with the assistance of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and specialist technical units and I have been assured by the Garda authorities that they are satisfied that the measures currently in place are appropriate.
