Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - School Staffing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

609 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if the requirement to have attained the junior certificate can be waived for the position of classroom assistant where applicants have completed relevant courses in child care (details supplied). [11537/01]

The junior certificate requirement for appointment as a special needs assistant may be waived when the applicant has satisfactory equivalent qualifications.

In cases such as that referred to by the Deputy the applicant for the post would be required to provide details of their qualifications to the school in question. Where the applicant does not have the junior certificate qualification the board of management will assess the candidate's other qualifications and, if satisfied, will request the Department to waive the junior certificate qualification. The Department normally supports the board of management's assessment of the candidate's suitability.
