Vol. 535 No. 1

Written Answers - Special Educational Needs.

Paul McGrath

Question:

679 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the further need for special language classes in Mullingar, County Westmeath; if he will access the benefits of having those classes on different sites as distinct to having them on one campus; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12278/01]

I am aware that difficulties have arisen in the location of suitable accommodation for an additional class for pupils with specific speech and language disorders in the Mullingar area.

At present, two schools in the area have special classes for pupils with speech and language disorders. One of the classes in question caters for junior pupils and is attached to a junior school. The other caters for senior pupils and is attached to a senior school in the area.

A further six pupils have been identified as suitable for enrolment in a further special class. My Department is pursuing the possibility of locating this additional class in one of the schools already catering for such children and on an age appropriate basis.

A proposal to develop accommodation in one of these schools is being actively pursued by my Department's inspectorate. I understand that the school authorities involved are currently considering proposals in this regard. I am hopeful of an early and positive response so that the necessary provision can be put in place as speedily as possible.

As an interim measure, I have asked my Department's inspectorate to consider the provision of resource teacher support to the pupils awaiting placement in the additional special class.
