Vol. 536 No. 1

Written Answers - National Coaching and Training Centre.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

151 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has given consideration to ensuring that functions and expertise already in place at the National Coaching and Training Centre at the University of Limerick will not be duplicated in the proposed Campus-Stadium Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13344/01]

The plans for Sports Campus Ireland envisage the development of the 500 acre site at Abbotstown as a centre of excellence in sporting facilities for a wide range of sports practitioners and spectators as well as a family destination in its own right, providing a major health and leisure amenity for the local community as well as the general public.

The role of the National Coaching and Training Centre is to raise the standard of coaching and performance in Irish sport, in the context of national sport policy and of Sports Council strategy for implementation of that policy.

The future role and structure of the National Coaching and Training Centre in Limerick is being considered in the context of the work of the high performance committee which was recently established by the Irish Sports Council to develop a strategy for high performance sport in Ireland. Both the National Coaching and Training Centre and Sports Campus Ireland are represented on that committee. The committee is due to complete its report by 30 June 2001.
