Vol. 536 No. 5

Written Answers. - Departmental Correspondence.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

131 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 136 of 1 May 2001 he will review the reply regarding correspondence (details supplied) in relation to compensation of driftnet fishermen; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14933/01]

I am satisfied with the content and accuracy of my reply to the question of 1 May 2001, having reviewed the correspondence referred to by the Deputy.

Having conducted further inquiries, my Department has established that, as previously stated, compensation to the drift net fishermen was paid in accordance with the recommendations of the committee representing them at the time of the claim and having regard to who held licences during the relevant period. The individual to whom the correspondence refers was unable to fulfil these criteria and I am advised was so notified.
