Vol. 538 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

179 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the reason for choosing the designated site for the new Garda station in Leixlip by his Department, given that it will encroach on the playing fields of Scoil Uí Dhalaigh; if he will examine the alternative options available with the objective of providing a Garda station forthwith and maintaining the school facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17909/01]

The Commissioners of Public Works have agreed terms for the acquisition of a site for the erection of a Garda station in Leixlip. The site is beside the Church of Our Lady's Nativity and Gaelscoil Uí Dhalaigh and is owned by the parish authorities.

The commissioners are satisfied that the site they have agreed to purchase is adequate for the provision of a Garda station and they have no intention of encroaching on the playing fields of the Gaelscoil. The exact boundary of the site, which is at present undefined, will be agreed in consultation with the parish authorities and the Gaelscoil as adjoining owners.

The Deputy will be aware that the commissioners have been seeking a site for a Garda station in Leixlip for some time now to no avail. I am satisfied that any alternatives available at this time have been explored fully and this site affords the best option for the provision of a Garda station in Leixlip.
