Vol. 542 No. 2

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

345 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department will fund the new sport exercise medicine faculty to be established by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. [24300/01]

My Department is advised that the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland propose to establish a

faculty of sport exercise medicine. The principal objective of the faculty will be to devise and administer professional education and training programmes and accreditation for medical

practitioners and specialists, including general practitioners, hospital consultants and doctors, who wish to pursue a career in sports and exercise medicine. The faculty will seek to have sports and exercise medicine recognised as a speciality by the Medical Council. The question of funding from my Department for the purposes of developing the new faculty does not arise.
